what are epdm seals ?

what are epdm seals ?

18 Aug 2021

EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer, which is a bit of a mouthful, so it’s commonly shortened to EPDM or EPDM rubber。

EPDM seals are manufactured using an advanced formulation of elastomer with a wide range of uses.EPDM gets its name from the chemicals (monomers) that are mixed together in various proportions to form it. These are ethylene, propylene and diene. The ethylene content is usually between 45% to 75%.

The diene monomers, while only form a small part of the composition of EPDM, provide the cross-linking that gives incredible resilience, flexibility and durability. The excellent material properties of EPDM come from this molecular mesh structure and make it unbeatable in terms of elasticity and resistance to ageing.

Sealing products made with EPDM provide operating temperatures ranging from -60 to 150°C. This range makes EPDM an excellent choice for applications which require temperature extremes and protection against weathering.

The benefits of EPDM seals

EPDM seals has many attractive properties, such as:

l High elasticity up to 400% over a temperature range of -35 °C to +120 °C

l Good resistance to hot water, many bases, acids (including fatty acids) and salts and ozone and UV rays.

l Excellent resistance to heat, water and steam, alkali, mildly acidic and oxygenated solvents, ozone and sunlight (UV).

l Resistant to the effect of brake fluids and other hydraulic fluids based on phosphate esters.

l Special EPDM compounds have good resistance to steam.

l With EPDM sulphur vulcanisation you get a cheap material for normal use with a maximum temperature of + 100°C (+212°F).

l With EPDM peroxide vulcanization it is resistant to hot water and/or low temperature steam, ketones, alcohols, engine coolants, organic and inorganic acids and bases. For system temperatures up to +120⁰C (+ 248⁰F) and maximum temperatures up to + 150 °C (+ 300 °F).

Industry use

EPDM seals, specifically rubber washer and gaskets, are commonly used across all kinds of applications and industries. These vary from medical devices through to water systems and automotive uses. With its strong combination of thermal and mechanical properties coupled with relative cost-effectiveness, you can also expect to see EPDM rubber seals in a wide range of household and automotive applications, including door/window seals and in refrigerators.

Disadvantages of EPDM

While the value and versatility of EPDM lends itself well to seal use across various industries, the material does have some notable limitations. The main disadvantage is its poor sealing performance against mineral oil products. EPDM seal are not recommended for use with oils and lubricants found in some types of industrial machinery which we recomend the NBR rubber seals.

The process of EPDM rubber

After polymerisation, a thermoplastic polymer is obtained, and one of the two double bonds of the monomer remains intact. This allows the polymer to be vulcanised, where standard sulphur bridges are formed between the polymer molecules. Mixed with soot and/or other fillers, a synthetic rubber is then obtained. The ratio between the quantities of the various monomers used largely determines the properties of the EPDM .
